Here at Greycroft you will find real North country hospitality set in the splendid scenery of “England’s Last Wilderness”. The North Pennines are now established as an “Area of Outstanding Beauty”, and Alston, as its focus, has a wide variety of attractions, many unusual shops and a number of cosy pubs and good eating houses. Although in Cumbria, we are on the fringe of Northumberland and Durham. Greycroft is set on a corner site with open views south across the beautiful South Tyne valley towards Cross Fell (the highest point on the Pennines). It is in the peaceful hamlet of the Raise, a five minute walk into Alston and is tastefully furnished to a high standard with our guests in mind.

Alfred Wainright's
Pictorial Walking Guides

Originally compiled in the 1950s and early 1960s, the Wainwright walking guides
are perhaps the most distinctive and unusual such guides ever devised. The result
of painstaking and lengthy research by their namesake and author over a period
of thirteen years, the guides have retained their original format and design
to this day. The books contain intricate hand drawn sketches by the author,
detailing routes of ascent, and gradients of the hills in and around the Lake
District and outlying regions.
